Hello Miss Preeti Nigam and Miss/Mr Anonymous, thanks for your visits on the blog.....Regarding the management optional, I don't know any body who appeared this year from this optional....you can wait for some time...UPSC may upload all the question papers on its website www.upsc.gov.in or in next few months unsolved will come in the market..you can also contact to any coaching institute e.g Vaji Ram & Ravi or Sri Ram, they can help you in this aspect.
Regarding the changes in the Civil Services, Dopt can deny extra ordinary leaves at any stage because leaves are not the rights, they can be denied by the government...still, We can't say anything regrading the proposed changes, you should wait for the notification in December....further query is welcome...keep blogging....

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been googling for past one month in order to find details about the Indian Foreign Services. Just when I was about to give up, Google brought me to the shores of your blog, from which one gets the impression that you seem to know everything (almost) about the civil services. So, please help me out with the following details regarding IFS.

1.) What kind of responsibility does an IFS officer have in the first 4-5 years of the job after the probation?

2.) I have heard diametrically opposite views regarding the work load. Some say its only 40-45 hrs/week of sedentary job along with a few protocol dinners/conferences/meets etc. Others say, its a demanding job requiring a lot of decision making and burdening one with a lot of responsibility. What is the real situation? I am asking this w.r.t an officer in his initial years of service. Is it that the former notion is about missions in countries like Greece, Austria, Denmark while the later is true for China, USA, UK and the likes ?

3.) Can you provide a rough estimate of all the allowances that an IFS officer would be entitled to on his first posting to a country like Germany ?

4.) What is the policy of transfers in IFS ? Someone could be posted in a city like Paris, while his batch mate would be manning the mission in Kabul. Are there some kind of rules observed for making this process fair or is it just another bureaucratic process deeply pervaded by political processes?

5.) What kind of training does an IFS officer go through at FSI, New Delhi ? Is he permitted to live with his wife and family during that period or the rules are similar to those of the foundation course?

6.) What is the current scenario of vacancies in IFS ? There has been a buzz that seats are going to be increased but the last time i checked it was still 26 for the 2008 batch.

7.) Is there scope for taking a break in between the services and pursue a higher degree in subjects like international economics, international relations etc. ? Does the GoI provide for some kind of allowance for this purpose ?

8.) Upto which rank can one expect to be recommended for IFS? My estimate is 70, and 50 to be on the safe side. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you very much for putting up such a nice blog.

Warm regards,

WD
