Hello Smitha,you rightly said that total training period for IRS is 16 months. But there are lot of field attachments in between such as excise,customs,service tax,military,navy,forest academy,industrial,etc. You can choose the locations across the country e.g. Delhi,Noida,Bangalore,Pune,etc. These locations gives you the experience of on job training.Thus there is complete fun and a great opportunity to visit across the country on government expenditure. The number of holidays are as usual according to the government notifications year wise.In nutshell We can say that IRS training is not at all boring. Regarding posting...Board ask for your choices...so far officers are lucky to get the postings of their choices. The final posting will be at the end of the training as an assistant commissioner in a revenue division.....Further queries are welcome.

Regarding IAS interview tips, It is indeed a personality test where the for most parameter is confidence. The board usually look for the level of confidence. No matter how many questions you have replied or not replied if your confidence level is high you are bound to get very high marks. Some other pointers can be:

Hello Nishant, Thank you for a visit on this blog. Let me reply your questions one by one :
[1] There is no word limit for an Essay paper. It is considered that approximate 1000 words or more is the safe limit. But there is no hard and fast rule for this. Some candidates have scored very high marks with 600 words essay. But generally 1000 plus words are safe.
[2] There is no fixed criteria UPSC follows to select people. The optional wise selection is only in prelims examination. In mains,it is simply the aggregate marks in the final list. You may have got the idea of 10% because mostly candidates choose geography optional.
[3] So far UPSC didn't disclose scaling pattern. But it is a practise to equalise the scoring pattern in myriads of optionals. I suggest you not to dig too much on this issue because nobody has any authentic information.
[4]For geography mains paper,you need to study first all the basic books of NCERT starting from 6Th to 12Th standard. Then take the help of Savinder Singh for Geomorphology,D S Lal for Climatology,books by Mr Mazid hussain,K.Siddarth,Rupa made simple and guide from Tata Mgaw hill.....Map practise is must.
[4A] Both the paper of Geography are scoring. generally candidates score more in paper 1....but I usually scored high in second paper. It depends on writing skills.
[4B]For good marks in geography,you need to have good command on map locations and very strong factual base will be good.
[5] For prelims,70 effectively correct questions in optional and 65 effectively correct in General study paper will be a safe score in the era of negative marking. But it varies on year to year basis depending on the difficulty level of the question paper.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BECOME CIVIL SERVANT??
It is a favourite question in UPSC interview board.Some times it is difficult to reply the real answer. Because It varies...for some it may be power,prestige,diversity of work or for some it is mere source of money.....to help the aspirant for the current interview I am presenting the writeup written by one IRS guy....
" In retrospect, it was not a totally unconscious choice. Somewhere along the years, I found that Government is the place where I would be happy to work. Nothing patriotic or serve-the-people or make-a-difference-in-people’s-life about it. I believe that only interest that men have is self interest. So when people tell me that they join civil services to serve the nation, I become a little circumspect. I am not really sure if we really serve the people. The job has a mandate to fulfill. We do it and we get paid for it. Nothing selfless or altruistic about it. It is just another job on earth.
However, the civil services do have an appeal of their own, distinct and undeniable. The challenges in the Government are immense. Any industry would have a section of population as its prospective clientele. But for the Government, the entire population is its clientele. The Government of India is represented in more countries and performs more varied activities than all the MNCs combined. The sheer numbers, the geographical stretch and mind-numbing diversity in its activities makes any Government the most challenging employer. The impact of its working is all pervasive. One of my batchmates, who had earlier put in more than a decade in the railways, recently told me that Mumbai runs more than three times the number of local trains for which the infrastructure was actually created. And that too with 99% trains running on-time. Trust me, work at Indian Railways is more challenging than any MNC.
If the challenges in the Government are one attraction, its conditions of employment are the other. It ensures that the work pressure does not lead to a burn-out. Personally, I always wanted to lead a balanced life. I believe that work should not become life. It should just be a part of life. I wanted to have enough time to pursue my other interests, say bore people by writing blogs. No wonder bureaucrats are such prolific writers. In such matters, Government of India is a very benevolent employer. Be it the five-day week or the sufficient leaves or the provision of benefits like health, housing etc, Government seeks to be the ideal employer. Its mid-career training programmes, where it funds the entire cost of post-graduation in prestigious universities like Harvard, Duke etc are something which you can never expect in even the best of the private sector firms. The exposure you get from the interaction with numerous institutions and distinguished persons in course of your career is invaluable.
So to put it simply, civil services offer a right mix of challenging opportunities and benevolent conditions of work, which nurtures a balanced growth of personality. As a pay-off, you might have to be contended with abysmally low salaries and curbs on your freedom in the form of conduct rules. But, that’s how life always is, a trade-off. I felt, and still feel, that implementing the Income-tax act, investigating tax evasions, conducting search and seizure operations, dabbling with transfer pricing and international taxation, being a part of budget formulation etc are more interesting than coding in a cubicle in a far off land earning tons of money but carrying the burden of monotony. It is a decision I made based on my observation of the world around me. It is for time to judge whether it would hold good in my case too."

Hello, there are ample possibilities of technical errors in this result. I know several cases of technical mistakes in UPSC mark sheets in previous years. But UPSC has plenty of excuses to give. This is the biggest problem with this independent constitutional body. Though conduct of exam is quite fair but there are several loopholes remained which destroy life of several eligible aspirant to become IAS officers. But at this moment we can't do much. The only thing is better to prepare for next remaining attempt.
I think there is a strong need to raise the issue of gross irregularity inside UPSC in parliament or any other forum. Some of us have tried earlier but their effort went in vain due to lack of support from the aspirants as well as the other institutions.
Anyway I am fully with you and wish you a grand success in your next attempt.

REPLY TO Mr Rajesh
Hello Rajesh, It is really disturbing to loose mains. But you have to muster courage to fight back. It is part and parcel of this preparation. Don't loose your faith in yourself. Next year is also a good year in terms of vacancies. So just wait for your chance. Regarding sociology optional,this year this optional has performed very badly [may be because most of the questions were from new syllabus]. Most of my friends who had this optional lost this attempt despite the fact that they are already in service with good track record in sociology. At this moment I can say that wait for mark sheet then only take some decisions. Since I had geography and Public Ad, so I can't say much about your optional. But keeping the fact in mind,if you are not able to score continuously in socio then it is advisable to change the optional with say philosophy,public ad,pali,etc. It has been observed by several aspirants[including topper few year back] that every optional has some good time and bad time alternatively. This year socio probably has bad phase. This will continue for at least two more years. Public ad has relatively very good phase since last year. So it may be a safe optional for you. In any case,this should be your own decision. Take some time,meet seniors,friends and then only go for a change. Since you have enough time now to decide on it.

CIVIL SERVICES EXAM-2008 RESULT
From unconfirmed sources [insider] in UPSC, CSE-2008 Mains result is going to be announced on 6Thu March 2009. The interview will commence from 23rd March to 24Th April 2009. This may be due to upcoming Lok Sabha election. All the best for the aspirants. I will keep you update about the interview schedule. Keep blogging.

To Mr Srinivas : Regarding History as a PT optional,I don't have much idea really as mine was Pub ad.....still you can make your attempt successful with 75 correct questions in Optional and 65 in GS...regarding cut off..it varies each year..in negative marking system it is now easy to get in to with low score and cut off also generally low...Regarding salary during probation period...after 6Th Pay commission,21000/- we got during foundation[ rest of the salary we got as an arrears in our respective academies] and now we are getting 25700/- after pension and other necessary deductions. So I think package is sufficient now. Good luck for CSE-2009.

CIVIL SERVICES EXAM -2008 MAINS RESULT
UPSC is going to announce the CSE-2008 mains result likely on 6th of March.WE got the information from inside sources that around 2100 candidates are going to be called for interview.The total number of vacancies will be around 900 including 198 in IRS[C&CE] and 200 in IRS[IT]....so hope for the best and prepare well for the interview. Since interview marks are huge enough to decide the final rank and services so kindly don't leave anystone unturned...I wish you a very best of luck for the coming result.

UPDATES FROM NACEN FARIDABAD
Hello everybody....after a longtime I am updating this blog.....Actually We went for NARCOTICS attachment [a part of field training] in Mandsaur[M.P.]...It was quite a unique experience for me...First time in my life I saw opium cultivation...IT was quite beautiful to see lancing...I also visited NEEMUCH opium factory...there I saw heroine,cocaine,ganja and other drugs...I have seen their testing method too.I realised the importance of vigilance on use of these drugs as It destroyed not only the life of an individual but the whole social fabric. The central narcotics board is working quite efficiently to check this menace in this country.
Now We all are moving to our next attachment..that is for Central Excise...I will update you about the current happenings.....keep blogging...

WHAT IS GOING ON???
I am very disturbed by seeing the pictures released from Israel-Palestine war front. It is very pathetic to fell helpless....to not to go there and take guns and shoot the perpetrators.....If this type of gross injustice will continue without any check then the day will come when all of us will feel to become terrorist...We shall not be in a position to not to justify the terrorism....Israel-Palestine issue is very old....Now it is the right time to take some solid steps to resolve this burning issue....If not the whole world will be suffered from the fallout of this incidence.

UPDATES FROM NACEN,FARIDABAD
Today was a holiday for us. Institute has arranged a bus tour to Delhi for those who are quite new to the city. The tour started at 9:30am and returned to Institute at 7:30pm. Probationers are happy and thankful to the academy. Since Delhi and NCR is chilling now a days...we all are looking forward for such more tours to nearby locations e.g. Agra,Shimla,Puskar,Ajmer,etc. In the batch of 128,all except five from Bhutan civil services belongs to IRS and undergoing different aspects of indirect taxation in India. Our field attachment for narcotics is going to start in February and afterwards we will proceed for excise attachment.
In the chilling winter,I will keep you updates on the happening at NACEN Faridabad.....till then enjoy blogging.

Hello friends, happy new year to all of you...I wish that God fulfill your all unfulfilled desires this year.....have faith in God in true sense then I feel HE will do rest of your work.
Regarding the query posed by Mr Srinivas, State PCS exams are similar in nature to UPSC in the sense that syllabus and plan of the examination [i.e Pre,Mains & Interview] are a bit similar....but nature of the questions are different sometimes...you can get the idea about it by going through the last years question papers.....Regarding the job aspects of Dy collector or DSP,though they are similar to IAS and IPS but rank and profile is different in the sense that they will be junior to IAS and IPS in their respective fields. Regarding their promotion aspects,constitution says that 33% of the vacancies should be fulfilled by promotion from PCS officers each year in to the respective cadres.....but the problem is that seats are very limited in IAS and IPS in any state in a particular year.....Thus it is prudent to apply for sate PCS along with UPSC because with same preparations you can qualify in those exams and increase your security aspect. REACHED AT NACEN FARIDABAD
Finally we have reached at our respective academies.....We too have settled some how...though there is huge accommodation problem but somehow we have manged it...today was the first day ..it was devoted to formal joining at NACEN.....If we compare the infrastructure with MCR HRD of AP,then NACEN scores quite less...WE have to create some pressure on the academy to at least maintain the available infrastructure....keep blogging,i will update about the happenings at NACEN regularly...

Hello Srinivas..once again thanks for showing interest in my blog.....regarding BP ...it is not a major problem in UPSC....you should not worry about your BP level as it is a temporary phenomena.....you just prepare for it...all other aspects are trivial in nature...so far as I know nobody has been disqualified for low/high BP......for any other medical related details kindly go through Employments News or UPSC website i.e. upsc.gov.in ....regarding the schedule for upsc examination they are a bit same as you have mentioned......so enjoy the upsc preparation...
Our foundation training is over now...almost 80% of my colleagues have left the institute....I am leaving tomorrow...It is really a very emotional moment for all of us...here faculty members are also very emotional......
